Electric, or AC powered stair lifts seem to be the more popular choice. Both stair lift types are installed the same way, and both will function similar. The main difference is that the AC stair lift is powered by an electrical outlet. They normally run on a 110 to 115 grounded VAC outlet, which is a standard wall outlet in your home. With an AC powered stair lift, the only main problem will be if you have a power outage because the unit will cease to work. This can be solved by adding a battery back-up package or by making sure that one is included with the unit. If your area is prone to power outages, it would be a good idea to get, or make sure that your electric powered stair lift comes with a battery back-up or go with a battery powered stair lift.

With battery powered stair lifts, also known as DC powered stair lifts, you will not have to worry about powered outages. Replacing the batteries can prove to be somewhat expensive however. If you have decided on a battery powered unit, be sure to ask the dealer how much battery life the unit is expected to get. Some battery powered units will also have slightly smoother starts and stops than the electric powered unit.

Whichever power option you choose, getting a stair lift that suits you best and is of high quality is most important.
